Glegg Manufacturing had the pleasure of installing a new Heritage Roof at St Helena Island National Park.
St Helena is a picturesque Island in Moreton Bay with an interesting past. The island’s history includes becoming a penal settlement, maximum security prison, sugar mill and now Queensland’s first Historic National Park.

Here’s how we successfully reproduced the charming and iconic heritage roof which was originally built in the early 1900’s.
The project brief: historic roof restorations
We were tasked with suppling the material for the reconstruction of the original roof form over a historic cay stone silo built in 1903.
To achieve this, we manufactured material for a steel-free standing gable roof for the following dimensions:
- Silo depth: 6m
- Silo width: 6m
- Roof pitch: 40 degrees
- Traditionally detailed
The material: heritage galvanised
We supplied Z600 for the project – the industry standard in heritage galvanised materials. With a high zinc content (600 grams per square meter), Z600 is durable with prominent spangle, making this was the perfect choice for the coastal environment and accuracy.
In this heritage restoration project we used Z600 for:
- corrugated roof sheeting,
- ridge capping,
- barge roll,
- gutters, and
- downpipes.
The final product: galvanised roof
The end result is a beautiful roof that looks just like the original.
Through restoration, the historic richness of the site is enhanced and protected.
The free-standing roof shields the sensitive cay stone silo walls from the elements, so visitors can gain a greater appreciation of the silo and St Helena Island for many years to come.
